A new app that uses artificial intelligence to show what people will look like when they get older may pose a security concern for users.
The popular app ‘FaceApp’ lets you take a picture of yourself, and then applies artificial intelligence technology to make you look elderly.
The app was created by the Russian company Wireless Labs, but a lot of people don't realize that using the app gives the company ownership of their picture.
Lance Ulanoff is the editor-in-chief of Lifewire.com, a technology information website, and says the Russian company can do whatever it wants with your FaceApp pictures. "A lot of our privacy is being compromised nowadays anyway so I wouldn't really be too surprised,” Ulanoff said. But Ulanoff also says that using it for fun is fine.
"If you want to just have a good time with your family and friends, I'd say it's okay," says Ulanoff.
Ulanoff says there's only a small chance your photo ends up in an ad, and that he’s even used the app himself. With this new info though, the Democratic National Committee is now urging all candidates running in 2020 to delete the Russian owned app.
The DNC's chief security organizer says there are significant concerns about the app having access to personal information.
