New Rochelle collective calls on school board to rescind appointment of new superintendent

Posted: Updated:

A group of concerned New Rochelle residents are calling on the school board to rescind the appointment of their new superintendent.

An organized group of New Rochelle parents, citizens and community leaders stood outside the city's high school, protesting Dr. Laura Feijóo, saying she's not capable of overseeing the diverse district.

The group known as "the collective" is calling on the Board of Education to engage in a new search process that includes transparency by allowing all stakeholders to participate in the vetting process.

The disapproval is based partially on Feijóo's recent filing of a $90 million lawsuit against her former employer, the New York City Department of Education. The lawsuit alleges discrimination for her demotion from her position that went to a candidate of color.

"The community is here and we've wanted to work together with the BOE, and had we been consulted as a community, we would have raised those red flags immediately, and we wouldn't be stuck in this position," says Katie Casellano Minaya, a district parent. "We would have helped we would have communicated and we need to listen to each other."

Feijóo said she's excited to lead the district at a meet-and-greet she held Wednesday. She held the meeting to discuss her vision, administrative plans and commitment to upholding the direction set forth in the district's strategic road map.

She says she's planning on hiring a diversity and equity officer, visiting schools and working with building leaders on new hires. She's also committed to an open-door relationship with all members of the community.

"I've served in diverse communities my whole career," says Feijóo. "In District 20 in Bay Ridge to Sunset Park, each distinct communities with culture and needs, and I supported students and families across the school system."

The BOE president has publicly stated Dr. Feijóo is the best candidate for the job because of her experience and reputation.

Feijóo will begin in her new role in November.
