A Yonkers woman says she is opening her home to any immigrants in fear of deportation.
Maddie Cheatham-Walker has lived in Yonkers her entire life. She says one of the reasons she’s never left is because of the city’s diverse community.
Cheatham-Walker says she's afraid the families who make the city diverse are at risk. She says she is opening her doors to provide sanctuary to undocumented immigrants afraid of being deported by ICE officers.
She has baby clothes and bathroom supplies ready for families that may have to suddenly leave their belongings behind.
Cheatham-Walker says she will be handing out flyers in Yonkers that outline immigrants’ rights and what they should do if someone comes to their home. She says that's important for immigrants to request a warrant because police can't come into their homes without one.
The working mother of two says her reason for helping immigrants is because, "We're all one people."
