Family: Gravesites are overgrown with weeds

A family is calling for action after seeing the condition of their loved one’s gravesite at a Westchester cemetery.
Ruth Strumke and her daughter came up from South Carolina to visit her husband’s gravesite at Assumption Cemetery in Cortlandt. Another family member is also buried close by.
The former Peekskill resident says the graves are clear and tidy now. But says when they visited on Monday, they were unkempt, just like some of the other gravesites in the cemetery. “When we get here, we couldn’t believe the site. It was overgrown with weeds. This was just put in in May, the beginning of May, we were very upset,” says Strumke.
The cemetery is a managed by the Assumption Catholic Church in Peekskill.
News 12 reached out to the New York Archdiocese for comment, but so far have not heard back.
