P.S. 9 in Prospect Heights was renamed Monday after the first African-American principal in New York City.

Descendants of Sarah Smith Garnet were honored by the school Monday, and received a portrait of the former principal.

Garnet’s family says she was a suffragette, and the school’s name change comes ahead of the 100th anniversary that the 19 Amendment was passed, giving women the right to vote.

The school was formerly named after Teunis G. Bergen, a Brooklyn politician who the school says supported slavery and spent many decades making it harder for African-Americans and women to vote.
