State sends Shinnecocks cease-and-desist order over billboards

The state has issued a cease-and-desist order to the Shinnecock Indian Nation regarding their planned billboards along Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays.
Earlier this month, Council Chairman Bryan Polite said the advertising space would bring in desperately needed money to the reservation for its health center, public safety, day care and other programs. They've had dozens of businesses asking about advertising on the space.
The Shinnecocks own 80 acres of land in that area.
Critics say the structures won't fit with the character of the area and could be a distraction to drivers. Southampton town officials, while conceding that the Shinnecocks own the property, vowed to do what they can to stop the project.
The tribe says the cease-and-desist order infringes on their rights.
The state Department of Transportation says it is reviewing the matter and is in the process of taking appropriate legal action.
