Hundreds attend funeral for state's 1st black public school teacher

Hundreds came out Saturday for the funeral of a beloved Bridgeport leader and community activist.
Alyce Laurayne Farrar-James died on May 6 at the age of 92, leaving behind a long legacy of leadership in the civil rights movement.
She attended Howard University and went on to serve in the field of education, becoming Bridgeport's and Connecticut's first black public school teacher.
Farrar-James went on to represent the east end of Bridgeport on the City Council and was known for her lively spirit and fierce commitment to the rights of those she served.
