Officials in a Bergen County town say that they are considering changing the name of a national holiday.
The Glen Rock Borough Council says that there is a consideration to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day to honor Native Americans. Glen Rock would be the first municipality in Bergen County to implement the change.
"I think it's important we talk about the role of inclusivity, the role Christopher Columbus had and that we really talk about what it means when we're honoring somebody who was shockingly cruel and committed acts of genocide and frankly, never laid a foot in North America,” says Councilmember Arati Kreibich.
There have been calls across the country over the years to change the holiday to honor Native Americans during the holiday instead of Columbus.
But the push has faced criticism as well – particularly from some Italian-Americans, who consider Columbus to be a notable Italian.
If Glen Rock decides to follow through with the proposal, the borough calendar would reflect the change in 2020.
