What happens next to the former site of a Nathan's in Dyker Heights is serving up some major controversy.

Public officials, including Councilman Justin Brannan, have proposed turning the 20,000-square-foot site into a middle school, citing the severe overcrowding of current schools in the district.

But some in the area aren't so sure that it would be a great idea. Over the last month, opponents of the plan have emerged and grown more vocal.

"Putting a school here is like putting the school right on the top of the Gowanus Parkway," says one opponent to the plan. "The traffic here is horrendous. It's a very unsafe location for kids."

Brannan was unavailable for an interview, but his aides say he is standing firm behind the proposal.
