Hard at work: ‘Fix-a-flat guys’ busy during pothole season
As the weather warms and all of the snow melts, New Jersey’s roadways are often left peppered with tire-damaging potholes.
The potholes, often as big as craters, leave many New Jerseyans with flat or damaged tires. They are often left looking for someone who can fix the tire in a jiffy.
Jeremy Hernandez works at House of Flats in Newark. He is considered one of the best at fixing tires and claims to be able to fix a flat in under five minutes. When News 12’s Brian Donohue caught up with him, it took him 12 minutes on one tire.
“It needed a plug,” he said.
Donohue found several of these “fix-a-flat” places around the Brick City. He says that the most colorful one was La Cocora Tire Shop on MacArthur Highway. It is painted yellow, “like a beehive,” Donohue says.
Customers were lined up to get their tires fixed at La Cocora.
“All four tires. I’ve been here less than 15 minutes,” says Manny Chavez. “I’m done. That is why I come to Newark.”
La Cocora has been run by the same family for three generations. Augusto Lugo opened the place in 1967 and his son and grandsons now run it.
The owners say that there's no shortage of business in New Jersey.
