Nassau DA: 14 indicted in 'brazen' drug ring connected to overdose death
Fourteen people have been indicted in a Nassau County drug ring tied to a fatal overdose, prosecutors say.
By day, Darrell Boyd worked as a janitor at the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. But prosecutors say Boyd worked a side job as the ringleader of a major drug operation, selling heroin and cocaine on a daily basis out of his Freeport home on North Columbus Avenue and directly to customers at the Cerebral Palsy Association.
"He was incredibly open with his drug dealing," says Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas.
Boyd is among 14 people facing criminal charges after law enforcement officials say they busted a Nassau narcotics trafficking ring with ties to California. Investigators say they seized narcotics with a combined street value between $600,000 and $700,000.
Tony McClam, 49, of Freeport, is accused of being one of Boyd's major suppliers, allegedly shipping drugs to him from California. Singas says some of the drugs were found hidden in a large, homemade candle in McClam's home. She says the drug ring is linked to the November heroin overdose death of a 62-year-old man in Freeport.
Investigators say the takedown should send a message to all drug dealers who try to sell narcotics on the streets of Long Island.
"This is how we roll in Nassau County," says Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. "You come into our county, you deal drugs, we're going to come after you."
News 12 reached out to the Cerebral Palsy Association for comment about Boyd's alleged involvement in the ring but did not immediately hear back.
