A group of eighth-grade students at a Brooklyn school are helping another classmate's dreams come true by building a wheelchair-accessible desk.
The students at I.S. 201 in Dyker Heights built the desk for their classmate Maria Pizzo, who says she's often uncomfortable in class even with the wheelchair-accessible seating the school offers.
The students added hooks for her backpack, adjustable legs and a cup holder to the desk and plan to add purple decorations soon.
Pizzo says she'll be a happier student and that the desk fits her needs, which means she can be more independent.
Cindy Scognamillo, the students' teacher, says they'll enter the finished product in a local student competition where students go head to head to solve world problems.
