NJ realtors launch campaign against false home buyers looking to score drugs
New Jersey realtors have embarked on a campaign aimed at shedding light on the opioid crisis and putting a stop to potential home buyers who use viewings as a way to steal prescription drugs.
Safe House, Safe Sell was unveiled this week. Realtors say some people disguise themselves as a potential buyer in order to go through medicine cabinets.
"When we sit down, we educate sellers, and when we start we talk about all the things such as making valuables inaccessible to people, and now we've added the drug portion of it in there because we've become aware that it's becoming an issue," says NJ Realtors' Immediate Past President Christian Schulter.
Schulter says many homeowners have complained about pharmaceuticals disappearing.
"People with narcotics and drug problems have been trying to think about ways that they can access drugs and unfortunately drug addicts are usually creative," says Schulter.
The campaign recommends homeowners and realtors make sure prescriptions are locked up and secured in a spot where potential buyers cannot find them. They also urge homeowners to get rid of unused or old prescriptions at a safe disposal site.
