Mayor Thomas kicks off re-election campaignPosted: Updated:
Despite felony charges against him for the alleged theft of campaign funds, Mayor Richard Thomas kicked off his re-election campaign Monday night.
Thomas, the youngest mayor in the city's history, maintains his innocence and is set to stand trial later this year. He says he will continue to fight to keep the mayoral office.
Running against Thomas are council members Delia Farquharson and Andre Wallace, and jail attendant Carlo Jean-Baptiste, Sr.
Wallace, the city council president, hosted his own campaign kickoff Monday night in Eastchester.
"We don't know if that man's even going to be here," Wallace says of his opponent. "He is facing six felony charges."
Mayor Thomas tells News 12 that is asking voters to "look at the situation."
"They're accusing me of stealing money from my own campaign," he says. "Alexandria Ocasio, the congresswoman, pays herself six grand a month. Millennials aren't wealthy like Bloomberg or Chelsea Clinton. We have to make sure that everybody has an opportunity to run for office."
The Westchester County Democratic party will choose its candidate next week.
