Police: Mt. Vernon man leads officers on chase through 2 states, 3 countiesPosted: Updated:
A wild police chase that spanned two states and three counties ended with a man in custody and a story that police were not buying.
Mount Vernon police say 24-year-old Howard Rowlett, of Mount Vernon, stole a BMW 3 series last week, struck a Westchester County police car in Mount Vernon Thursday morning and then took off.
A few hours later, Mount Vernon police spotted that same car near Mount St. Michael High School in the Bronx. When they approached the BMW, they say Rowlett took off again, hitting and dragging one of those officers. A Mount Vernon officer then shot at the vehicle while it was fleeing the scene.
Minutes later, police say Rowlett crashed into a white Toyota and took off on foot.
According to Stamford police in Connecticut, Rowlett walked into Stamford Hospital under a different name saying he was shot outside a restaurant in Stamford. After filling out the medical form with his real name, police were alerted and arrested him.
Rowlett is being held in Stamford on $55,000 bond.
The Mount Vernon police officer was treated for minor injuries and released.
