‘Blue Monday’ considered the ‘most depressing day’ of the year
The third Monday in January has been dubbed “Blue Monday” and is considered to be the most depressing day of the year.
Researchers from the United Kingdom took into account weather conditions, debt levels, time since Christmas and time to fail New Year’s resolutions as the basis for the designation.
But psychologist Janie Feldman says that she is not sure if there is enough science to support the theory.
“I’d like to see more studies to see if that can be substantiated and backed up,” she says.
But Feldman does that that feeling more even more down than normal after the holidays is a real thing.
“Seasonal Affective Disorder…There are people who become clinically depressed because of the change in hormone levels inside…not having the exposure to natural lighting,” she says.
Feldman recommends getting plenty of rest and exercise, setting goals and staying hydrated as a way to combat some of the depression.
Psychologist Anthony Taso adds that paying attention to what you're thinking and feeling, as well as reaching out to a professional for help, are other solutions to include.
