Nassau County police say the suspect who mowed down a South Hempstead gas station manager over a $22 tank of fuel was apprehended in Philadelphia.
"Sometime late last night, he turned himself in to the police department," said Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
Before that, police found 33-year-old Joshua Roston's GMC SUV abandoned by the side of a Pennsylvania road. It was brought back to Long Island late Wednesday.
Police previously identified Roston, of Baldwin, as the driver who struck and killed Cemal Dagdeviren at the Pit Stop gas station on Grand Avenue. Dagdeviren, 59, jumped in front of Roston's SUV to try and stop him from leaving without paying for $22 worth of gas, according to authorities.
Police said it was unclear when Roston left for Philadelphia, nor was it known how he made it all that way with no license plates on the car. News 12 has learned that on Monday, the day of the hit-and-run, Roston was issued tickets in Pennsylvania for careless driving and not having plates. But at that point, Roston had not been publicly identified as the man behind the wheel.
The Pit Stop's owner told News 12 Friday that he was glad to hear an arrest was made.
"A person like that doesn't deserve to live," he said.
Police say Roston had been arrested earlier this month for allegedly stealing gas at another station and for stealing work boots.
Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas says Roston will face intentional murder and hit-and-run charges when he's extradited back to New York. If convicted, he faces at least 25 years to life in prison.
