YONKERS -

In two days, incoming state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins will officially be sworn into office, making her the first black woman in state history to hold that powerful position.

She says after years of being in the minority, her new 39-member Democratic majority has their work cut out for them.

Stewart-Cousins stopped by News 12 Monday and detailed the list of legislative priorities they plan to address this year, including codifying Roe vs. Wage into state law, addressing climate change and criminal justice reform, rental laws, health care protections and voting rights.

The Democratic leader says as she heads to the Capitol to assume one of the highest elected jobs in the state, she's bringing her Yonkers values with her and says she believes those values will guide her and help her do right by her constituents and all New Yorkers.

"I'm grateful to my colleagues who have put their trust in me, but I'm also grateful to the people in my community who continue to support my efforts. so I’m walking in on behalf of them,” she says.
