Starting next year, teens in New York City will have a chance to broadcast their own radio show that can be heard anywhere in the world.
The soon-to-be launched after-school program called Teen Squad is being organized by Radio Free Brooklyn.
The group is taking 10 students between the ages of 13 and 18 per session to teach them the ropes of producing a radio show. It will include interviewing, live broadcasting and the technical aspects of audio production.
By the end of the session, each group will have their own program on the network, which can be streamed worldwide.
"When you get stuff out of a textbook, it becomes very theoretical-based and very much in your head and I feel like when you have a hands-on approach, you just get sort of a visceral experience and more of an understanding by doing something," says Radio Free Brooklyn Executive Director Tom Tenney.
The first session starts in January.
