An ice cream staple in Dumbo for nearly two decades is serving its final scoops at its current location.
Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory has had a lease with the Economic Development Corporation inside the old Fireboat Station. But this past summer when that agreement was transferred to Brooklyn Bridge Park, owner Mark Thompson was informed they had to leave by the end of the year.
The park selected Ample Hills Creamery to take over the space instead, the result of a public request for proposals.
"The construction and development of the waterfront here on the side of the river in Brooklyn is not stopping anytime soon," says Thompson. "This is just the beginning and unfortunately I think we were one of the fall businesses that are taking a hit on this development."
The store's sign is already down, and customers have voiced their displeasure about the upcoming change, saying the place is a neighborhood staple.
Park officials say there are in conversation with the ice cream shop about other potential locations within the park.
Thompson says he has his sights set on a few local spaces to move to.
In the meantime, Brooklyn residents can visit the factory's smaller location in Greenpoint.
