Islip town officials are asking for $60 million in federal funds to make improvements at MacArthur Airport.

The multimillion dollar plan includes a proposal for a new 100,000 square-foot concourse and improvements to the baggage terminal here at the airport.

Airport Commissioner Shelley LaRose-Arken said in a statement, "We have to go out and recruit new airline carriers. And we have to look at the New York metro area and get more people to come out and use this airport."

A total of $6 million would be financed through bonds, which would have to be approved by the town board.

If funding is approved, airport officials say construction could be complete by 2022.

If passed, the bond resolution would be reimbursed by $4.50 tax on plane tickets.
