Youth group volunteers to keep Yonkers streets clean

Dozens of volunteers gathered Saturday as part of their weekly effort to better the Yonkers community by keeping it clean.
The Latin American Youth of Yonkers group comes together every Saturday to pick up garbage and litter in the streets.
The volunteers meet at noon on New Main Street every week and say they have been doing so since 2012.
"I feel like we are giving something to the community, [and] at the same time we feel good,” said volunteer Pedro Alvarez. “The only way you get that feeling is by coming out and doing the same thing."
Alvarez is one of the many adults who has joined the youth effort. He describes the cleanup project as a way to ensure that every child can feel that they are a vital part of their community.
News 12 is told that the project is funded by the families of volunteers, though they say they hope that will one day change.
Alvarez says that anyone is welcome to contribute funding for the cause, including community business owners.
