Claims of overcrowded school bus conditions enrage parents

Posted: Updated:
Pine Bush -

Some parents in Pine Bush say they were just made aware of students’ claims of overcrowded conditions on their school bus.

Parents say they were told that students are standing up, sitting on the floor in the aisle and sitting in each other’s laps during the ride to Crispell Middle School.

It has apparently been an ongoing issue since the beginning of the school year.

A representative for Birnie Bus Service, the company that transports Pine Bush students, says they're aware of the allegations. The representative says that at no time did the number of kids exceed the amount allowed by the state, which is three children per seat.

"We're talking about middle and high school kids and some are bigger than we are,” said one parent. “You're not fitting three in a seat."

A representative for the bus company says they have since put a larger bus on the route until other changes can be made. They say they are reviewing bus video, and have not yet seen any evidence of children seated on the floor.

News 12’s calls to the Pine Bush School District for comment have not been returned.
