Old railroad line to become park and playground

Posted: Updated:

An old railroad line will soon be the newest place for children to play in Yonkers.

The long-vacant Yonkers Greenway on Lawrence Street is being renovated into a park, with a full playground, garden and artwork.

Once complete, it will also link Yonkers to New York City with a two-mile walking and biking path.

With the assistance of local non-profits and corporations, the project is expected to be complete by next spring.  "We're going to clean this property up, raise $5 or 6 million, and put a nice park here for all of the young people that live in this community to benefit from," says Mike Spano, mayor of Yonkers.
