A New City firefighter who battled severe flu complications returned home Friday after months spent in hospitals.

Willy McCue, 20, got sick in February from last winter’s nasty flu strain. He eventually went into septic shock and required amputations.

He spent four months in intensive care at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. He left there in May for the Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Center in West Haverstraw.

There were cheers and applause as McCue left the rehabilitation center. He’ll continue to recover at home. Volunteers built a new addition for him that cost $250,000. Fire officials say most of the work was donated by contractors and the rest was raised through fundraisers.

“The community came together and really supported me and my family,” says McCue. “I'm very appreciative of it. It's an amazing thing and I'm really going to benefit from it.”

A celebration for those who helped build McCue's home addition will be held Saturday at the New City Fire Department from 3-11 p.m.
