Officials unveiled the co-naming of East 85th Street Friday to honor a late U.S. Army sergeant who grew up on the street.
Borough President Eric Adams and Councilman Alan Maisel were in attendance at the co-naming ceremony for U.S. Army Sgt. Roshain Brooks, a paratrooper who died in Iraq last August during an exchange of gunfire with Islamic State group radicals.
Sgt. Brooks immigrated to the U.S. from Jamaica.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal and Combat Action Badge.
A performance from the students of the P.S. 115 musical theater club was held during the ceremony.
Several of his closest partners spoke, as well as several cousins and family friends. His parents and wife sat in the front row.
After the ceremony, Maisel walked alongside family members to the corner of Avenue L and East 85th Street, where they pulled a string to reveal the new sign.
Attendees of the ceremony say their hope for the community is that they won't say Sgt. Brooks lived on or was on the block, but that he is on the block.
