The superintendent of a Calverton charter school is taking student safety into his own hands by directing traffic to help students safely cross the street.
Raymond Ankrum directs traffic outside Riverhead Charter School. Ankrum does it twice a day on busy Route 25 to protect his students.
The location doesn't have a school speed zone. The speed limit on the road is 50 mph.
The school had a crossing guard employed last year by the Riverhead Police Department, but he got hit by a car directing traffic. The job has gone unfilled because the police chief says it's not safe for anyone to stand in the road.
“I'll be the one to put myself in jeopardy in order to get the buses in and out because it has to be done,” Ankrum told News 12.
The state Department of Transportation says it did reduce the speed limit in front of the Charter School about 10 years ago, and would look into doing another traffic study.
The chief of the Riverhead Police Department told News 12 that the state DOT told him that the speed limit was not going to change.
The superintendent says he will continue to direct traffic until he receives help from either the state or the town.
