SPRING VALLEY -

Clarkstown officials say the county announced at a meeting that the jitney bus service in the village of Spring Valley will be terminated at the end of the month.

The white and blue buses take residents to more than 30 stops in Spring Valley, Ramapo and Monsey six days a week.

Clarkstown Councilman Don Francino says the cuts come down to cost.

"It's a matter of cost. That's the only reason why any town, village, county would eliminate services,” he says.

Some feel that by eliminating service, many jobs could be in jeopardy.

News 12 went to the village of Spring Valley for comment, but the only thing that it said was that not many people ride the bus.

Barbra Johnson, of Spring Valley, says she rides the Spring Valley Jitney bus five days a week. She says ending service will also affect a lot of people with disabilities and senior citizens who rely on it.

"Sometimes they just don't have enough to catch the regular bus because its $2. It’s 40 cents for senior citizens on the Jitney bus,” she says.

Discount fares are also available on several other bus services, including Transport of Rockland and TRIPS.

Johnson says she believes the Jitney is still a vital service in the village.

The village of Spring Valley has not confirmed if its terminating the Jitney bus service.
