Rockland steps in after veterans program loses federal fundsPosted: Updated:
An organization that provides transportation for veterans is breathing a sigh of relief Friday after the county agreed to continue to provide funds for the group.
More than 100 veterans use the nonprofit group “Bridges” to get them to VA hospitals in Montrose and Castle Point.
Executive Director Carlos Martinez told News 12 that he recently found out they lost between $20,000-30,000 in federal funding. It meant buses wouldn't be able to take veterans to their appointments.
Rockland County has since stepped in. While News 12 was reporting on the loss of funds, Rockland’s Mental Health Department commissioner called Bridges and said the county will continue to fund the program.
Bridges says it will also continue fundraising for their programs to fully help veterans.
