Moms of displaced children upset at district’s handling of mold situation

YONKERS -

Parents of students who were evacuated from School 15 in Yonkers told News 12 they are fed up about how the district handled the incident and are enraged at the new learning environment for their kids.

Mothers of the displaced children who were relocated to Dodson Elementary said there are children sitting in a gymnasium who have special needs and that there is no partition or air circulating.

Toxic mold was found inside School 15 this week. As a result, nearly 600 students had to be relocated for possibly three months.

The older grades were sent to at St. Bartholomew School. Pre-K through fourth grade were sent to Dodson.

Many of the mothers of the younger students went to dismissal Thursday with supplies in hand, with everything from dry-erase boards to Clorox wipes, in an effort to give their kids a normal learning environment - something they say the district couldn't accomplish.

The mothers claim that teachers at School 15 knew about a leaky roof inside the building at least three years ago when they first notified the district of the problem. The moms claim the district did nothing about it and that it took one of them to tell them there was a leak before there was a response.

In a statement to News 12, the superintendent said they were aware of a problematic roof at School 15. The superintendent said it was planned that a new roof would be installed in 2020 or 2021 but "recent heavy snows, rains and high humidity have amplified and accelerated its failure."

Moms like Elizabeth, who is part of the PTA, said that someone needs to be held accountable.

“I fear for my son's safety, I fear for his health, I fear for his education. I shouldn't have to feel that way,” she said.

The school district also told News 12 that it is working on relocating students who are in the gymnasium to other parts of the Dodson School.
