Monday was the 231st anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution and a Westchester lawmaker held a forum with local students to discuss the significance of the historic document.

State Assemblyman Tom Abinanti says more people need to be educated on what is in the Constitution, which is why he held the forum.

Callie Anderson, who works for the student-run paper at Pace University, says people need to be aware of what they're reading and watching in the news, especially with criticism of the media at an all-time high.

"Be critical of the media that they're consuming," Anderson advises. "And not just assuming that things are good or things are bad because of the source that they're looking at."

Dominican Republic immigrant Carlos Mercedes Meran says to him, the Constitution means everyone has the same human rights.

"I feel like I came to the best country in the world, regardless of what's going on right now," Meran says.

As part of the discussion, each student was given a copy of the Constitution.

Kadija Shaw says she would like to see some changes to the document.

"Now we're in a new time period," Shaw says. "With new types of people and it definitely should be amended to our society today."
