Second span of Cuomo Bridge opens to trafficPosted: Updated:
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were joined by other dignitaries for the official opening ceremony of the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge today.
Grace VanderWaal, winner of "America's Got Talent" in 2016, sang the national anthem to kick off the festivities on the eastbound span of the bridge.
The second span of the $3.9 billion project is set to open to traffic overnight Friday into Saturday. Officials said the right lane would be the first to open as crews work throughout the night to open all four lanes.
"I hope whatever you see when you look at this bridge you find it uplifting and inspiring," said Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The new span features wider lanes, emergency shoulders, and a soon-to-be dedicated bus lane.
"New York is leading the way proving if you build it they will come," said Hillary Clinton. "And showing we know how to get it done."
Meanwhile, state DOT crews replaced the old Tappan Zee Bridge signs on the Thruway late Thursday night.
