North Rockland starts first-ever full-day kindergartenPosted: Updated:
Some youngsters are breaking new ground in one Rockland County school district today.
It's not just the first day of school for kids at West Haverstraw Elementary, it's also the first day ever for full-day kindergarten.

The school is one of three in the North Rockland Central School District that is now offering full-day kindergarten. Up until now, it was one of a handful of districts in the state that only had a half-day program.
Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski has been fighting for years for statewide universal full-day kindergarten. He says the district’s part-time kindergarteners were just not keeping up with the state’s full-time curriculum. “Now kids should all be on the same page. The full-day program was included in the 2018-2019 state budget,” says Zebrowski.
This is also a big win for parents who have been advocating for a full-day kindergarten. The state is expected to fund it for the next three years.
