Baby Café opens in Spring Valley

SPRING VALLEY -

A very special kind of cafe is opening today in Rockland County.

There's a newly renovated room at the Martin Luther King Multipurpose Center in Spring Valley called a Baby Cafe.

The room doubles as a support center for breastfeeding women and moms-to-be. The local spot is the newest addition to the national non-profit Baby Cafe USA. At this location, women can get one-on-one consultations with lactation specialists for free.

Those behind the cafe say it’s fitting that Black Breastfeeding Week and this grand opening coincide because both are a celebration of life. According to research from Baby Cafe USA Research, there are disparate numbers of women of color breastfeeding. The hope is this cafe, the second of its kind in the county, will help change that. "I’m here today to show women of color it’s your place too, its everybody's place," says Jenise Stewart, a Spring Valley mom

The cafe is now open to woman and their families every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
