Measles is making its way back into households around the country, and New York state is no exception.

"We did have some individuals who came through our county through the summer who had not been vaccinated," says Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler. "It's rare that we see measles now."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in the last year there have been 107 people with measles in 21 states, including New York.

Most people are immune to the measles by the time they are adults because of earlier vaccinations. But those who weren't vaccinated may be more susceptible to the virus if exposed.

Measles symptoms include fever, coughing and a rash.

Carol Widell, a school nurse in Yonkers, recommends making sure kids get vaccinated for the measles.

"It just involves keeping the community safe and healthy and they're just necessary," she says.

Westchester will be providing free vaccines before the new school year.
