Westchester County Executive George Latimer is taking an aggressive approach to the upcoming 2020 census by signing an executive order to create a "Complete Count Committee."
"The bottom line is they've introduced a question into the census that hasn't been used before, and I have to ask why," Latimer says, referring to the new question asking participants their citizenship status.
The census is tied to federal and state funding. It also determines political representation in the U.S. and state legislatures.
Urban communities and municipalities with large immigrant populations like Port Chester are also creating committees in hopes of an accurate count.
One Ossining woman told News 12 that she would not be participating in the 2020 census. It comes after an Ecuadorian immigrant was arrested in Ossining by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The man's wife told News 12 that agents arrested the wrong person.
Latimer says the new committee will be looking into ways to reach residents through social media and local nonprofits.
