New Jersey health officials have confirmed two more human cases of the West Nile virus, bringing the total to three.
A 74-year-old man in Hunterdon County, a 76-year-old man from Essex County, and an 80-year-old woman from Hudson County were all treated and released from hospitals.
Dr. Shereef Elnahal, New Jersey's Health Commissioner, said in a statement, “Residents should protect themselves by using repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants and avoiding the outdoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
Between July 8 and July 28, officials say a record number of 195 mosquito pools, a collection of trapped mosquitoes, tested positive for West Nile in New Jersey, which is double the amount during the same time last year.
It's also higher than the five-year average of West Nile during the same period.
AP wire services helped contribute to this report.
