Most of Clifton’s Weasel Brook Park has been shut down after officials found elevated levels of arsenic.
Some Hadley Avenue residents say that they are concerned because recent heavy rains have brought some of that contaminated material into their homes. Flooding broke a part of the fence in Weasel Brook Park.
"The amount of water that came through here, it looked like chocolate milk,” says resident Bennie Sabolewski.
Sabolewski says that there are many kids, senior citizens and animals that live in the neighborhood that could potentially be exposed to the dangerous chemical.
“Somebody’s got to come up with answers,” Sabolewski says.
The park was closed back in the spring once the arsenic was found. The Passaic County Health Department says it is currently looking for a contractor to do the cleanup.
"Any kind of contaminant they have inside the soil, inside the park, I'm sure has washed up to the top and managed to make its way straight down the street and into people's homes,” says neighbor Adam Gregoczyk.
Health officials say that arsenic clings onto the soil that's deep down and that they don't think it was part of the runoff. But neighbors say they want tests done to prove it.
"Nobody is telling you, ‘This is what we're doing about it. This is the cleanup process that we're going through. Here are the progressive steps that we need to take in order to make the area safe,’” Gregoczyk says.
News 12 New Jersey reached out to the county for more information about the cleanup, but did not hear back.
