Bridgeport police say a 13-year-old girl was struck by a bullet while driving with her family Saturday morning.
The incident happened on William and Roosevelt Streets.
Records obtained by News 12 Connecticut say the victim "suddenly felt something burning on her side--and she was bleeding." The records go on to say gunfire entered the car the teen's mom was driving, as her family was returning home from the laundromat and a "bullet was recovered from her clothing."
Police say the child's mother rushed to Bridgeport Hospital where doctors say the bullet only grazed the girl's head.
The family is extremely grateful, but officials are left wondering why this happened.
"They have no beef with anybody--there were no problems--so it appears to be a random act," says Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez.
Perez says the bullet would have entered the teen's brain had its trajectory been just one millimeter to the left, according to doctors.
Neighbors say they were horrified to learn of the incident and hope the girl will be OK.
Perez says they will continue to investigate the incident and found out who committed the crime.
Police are asking anybody with information to call their Tip Line at 203-576-TIPS.
