Middletown tenants feel unsafe after apartment theftPosted: Updated:
Tenants at a Middletown apartment complex say they feel unsafe Friday after several cars were robbed.
The incident happened Thursday morning at 9 Academy Ave.
Surveillance video shows the burglar breaking into cars and walking inside the building. The thief is described as tall, white and in his mid-40s. He is a regular in the area and has been spotted before.
“He walks around here, he checks out our cars, he checks out what we do,” says resident Jasmine Mendez. “A lot of little kids live here, you never know what will happen next.”
Some tenants say the suspect knew what he was doing when he walked into an open side door, then out again to break into cars. They say he stole clothes, GPS devices and vehicle registration and insurance papers.
The thief also allegedly cut himself on a car.
“My car has blood on the doors and stuff all over,” Mendez says.
News 12 reached out to the Middletown police department about the investigation, but did not receive a response.
“If he knows the building and spent a lot of time in the building, he was probably trying to see if the doors were unlocked,” Mendez says. “For me, it's unsafe.”
