Dozens arrested during raid for alleged cellphone fraud scheme

MOUNT VERNON -

Officials say nearly a dozen people were arrested during a raid in Mount Vernon and are accused of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

According to federal agents, the suspects arrested were part of an alleged million-dollar nationwide cellphone fraud scheme that had been operating for at least four years. They say the operation was based in Westchester.

Investigators say the scheme used information off the dark web to hack into the accounts of ordinary people. The hackers would then take the victim's information to a store and buy iPhones, iPads and watches.

They say the suspects accessed more than 3,300 customers’ cellphone accounts and illegally obtained more than 1,200 cellphones, leaving unsuspecting customers to foot the bill.

According to the criminal complaint, the suspects traveled to 30 states to complete the operation. Most of the devices were shipped to the Bronx, where they were sold.

Officials say they seized dozens of cellphones, computers and a video that detailed the necessary steps to commit cellphone fraud when they raided the suspects’ Mount Vernon apartment.

The suspects are facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
