Westchester offers free hepatitis A shotsPosted: Updated:
The Westchester County Health Department is offering free hepatitis A shots this weekend.
Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection that you can get from contaminated food or water.
The county saw a hepatitis A scare last October, when an employee at Bar Taco in Port Chester contracted the infection.
Now, the health department is encouraging restaurant workers to get the vaccine.
Child care workers also pose a risk.
"Sometimes babies that they take care of are too young to be vaccinated themselves, so they're vulnerable," says Dr. Laurie Smittle. "And also, child care workers are exposed to diapers that could carry it."
Officials say people should be aware that you will need a second shot six months after the first.
The free shots are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Court Street Clinic in White Plains. You can make an appointment online at www.health.ny.gov/gotoclinic/60 or call 914-995-5800 or 914-995-7499.
