Ramapo officials are warning residents not to swim at the Tilcon Quarry.
Police say swimming in the Suffern quarry is not only dangerous, but also illegal.
Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht says the site has hidden hazards and access to the top is not easy. He says if there was a seriously injury, it would be difficult to get an ambulance up there.
He says the town now has police searching the area.
"There's been trouble with people trespassing on the site and our police actively patrol it and arrest and prosecute anybody who is caught trespassing," Specht said.
The piece of land is located in the village of Suffern but is owned by the town of Ramapo. The town has not found a purpose for the land, but continue to keep it shut off to residents.
Town officials say they understand why residents would want to hike and swim at the quarry, but it's not worth it.
Specht says about 24 people have been arrested so far this year for trespassing.
