Completion date for East Third Street Bridge pushed backPosted: Updated:
The East Third Street Bridge on the border of Mount Vernon and Pelham was due to open next month -- but it won't be ready in time.
The bridge, which runs over the Hutchinson River Parkway, is now slated to be completed in December and have traffic back on it in the spring.
The bridge was torn down a month ago, and a temporary bridge is now in place to allow traffic to move across.
The East Third Street Bridge was built in 1927. Officials say it was outdated and could no longer handle daily traffic.
As the new bridge is built, there are plans to add protections against flooding from the Hutchinson River that already spilled over onto the parkway this week.
Stones from the old bridge are being saved at a DPW yard in Mount Vernon and will be added to the new bridge.
