Jones Beach was temporarily shut down after a shark sighting, and two sharks were caught off Fire Island Thursday - just one day after two young people were apparently bitten.

Lifeguards at Jones Beach spotted a sand shark near the Central Mall around noon, and kept swimmers from entering the water for about one hour.

Officials also said that multiple sharks were caught Wednesday, and two more were caught Thursday off Fire Island.

News 12 reported that a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were bitten while in the ocean Wednesday at separate beaches on Fire Island. Both are expected to be OK.

A tooth was removed from the boys' leg, which is being examined by state officials.

"We have photos of the injuries and we're having our experts at the aquarium, Stony Brook and Department of {Environmental Conservation} look at the tooth and see what it is," says Basil Seggos, the state DEC commissioner. "We're not ruling anything out."

During a news conference at Good Samaritan Hospital, officials say the female victim, Lola Pollina, had minor surgery on her leg and is in good condition.
