Health Dept. finds blockage that caused raw sewage to flow into Yonkers lakePosted: Updated:
The Westchester County Health Department has confirmed that it responded to complaints last week from tenants at a Yonkers apartment complex who said there was a strong odor coming from the lake across the street.
The department says it went to a complex located at 47 Shoreview Drive about the odor. While there, it found sewage backed up to the building's crawl space and then being pumped into the lake. The Health Department says the building stopped the pump after being slapped with a violation.
The tenants, who live at the Crestwood Lake apartment complex at 90 Beaumont Circle, said the odor smelled like rotten eggs and was making them sick.
Allison Conway, a tenant at the Crestwood Lake complex says she has witnessed garbage trucks from their apartment complex dumping what she believes is raw sewage into the lake. News 12 spoke to the Crestwood Lake superintendent, who said he didn't know anything about trucks dumping any raw sewage into the lake. She says the odor is making her sick.
"Dizzy, falling. I just got out of Mount Sinai a week ago Sunday," she says.
Conway says she is also sick from asbestos that was found in 125 garages in that apartment complex back in February.
The building at 47 Shoreview Drive is scheduled to have a hearing in the asbestos case on July 24.
