July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention MonthPosted: Updated:
Law enforcement are encouraging drivers to keep their cars safe as July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month.
The FBI says more than 760,000 cars were stolen in the U.S. in 2016 -- that's one every 40 seconds.
The cost of lost property a year totals nearly $6 billion.
Officials say nearly half of stolen cars are never found.
To make sure your car isn't stolen, safety experts recommend you always lock your doors and windows when you park, try to park in a well-lit area, don't leave the car running or the keys inside, and make sure to stow away valuable items.
