Posted: Updated:If you're planning on hitting the roads this July 4th, you can expect a lot of company.
AAA predicts record breaking travel throughout the day with nearly five million Americans driving 50 miles or more to their destination. This is the highest number ever recorded and a more than five percent increase compared with last year.
TRAFFIC CENTER: Traffic updates and cameras
Experts are also predicting record-setting travel on trains and planes.
The reason for the records is that gas prices have dipped slightly since Memorial Day and that July 4th lands on a Wednesday this year. This means, travelers are essentially taking advantage of two weekends. Another way to look at it, is the holiday travel is spread out over six days.
To help with traffic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has suspended construction-related lane closures until tomorrow.
