WEST POINT -

It is the start of a new year at West Point as Reception Day is held at the military academy.

Reception Day marks start of six-weeks of rigorous basic training, after which the students will be formally accepted into the Corps of Cadets.

The new class will be fitted for military clothing, given haircuts and start learning how to march and toe a line.

It's also an historic day at West Point. Lt. General Darryl Williams will become the first African-American officer in charge of the prestigious military academy.

The Virginia native served as deputy chief of staff for the Army in Europe and most recently commanded a NATO unit in Turkey.
