Residents welcome Columbus Ave. road improvement project

MOUNT PLEASANT -

A busy roadway in Mount Pleasant is set to get an $8.2 million makeover.

County legislators approved a road improvement project that will completely renovate a little more than 2 miles of Columbus Avenue from Lakeview Avenue to Nannyhagen Road.

Residents like Linda Carpentieri say the upgrade is a good thing.

"I think anytime you have improvement in any communities it can only make it better," says Carpentieri.

The project includes repaving the road, installing handicapped-accessible sidewalk ramps, new traffic loops, pavement markings and more.

There are four schools located along the section of roadway plus the Rose Hill shopping center. Lawmakers say pedestrian traffic has increased in the area over the years and there's no safe place to walk. That's why sidewalks will be built from Columbus Elementary School to the shopping center.

A start date for construction has not been released yet.
